Jocelyn Anquetil, the Jersey senior Community Art Works winner (former Hautlieu School student) described her week-long internship at the Deutsche Guggenheim museum in Berlin as varied but amazing, if a little bit tiring! She feels she has an improved knowledge of artists as a direct result of her internship, which will come in handy as she embarks on her art foundation degree course at Camberwell College of Arts, part of the University of the Arts London.
“Berlin is huge! But I was struck by how small the Guggenheim is, it’s just one room displaying one exhibition at a time.” The current exhibition is by Mexican artist, Gabriel Orozco. Jocelyn’s tasks varied from sorting archives of photos for the Guggenheim’s next exhibition brochure to helping a three year-old make a butterfly out of recycled materials in one of the Guggenheim’s art & craft community workshops for children.
“To get an idea of what it’s like to work in an international museum, on the first day I had to put a T-Shirt saying ‘Talk to Me’ – which people did, but in German! Luckily an English-speaker was on stand-by to help out.”
Jocelyn also got to sample the arty city of Berlin during her week, taking in the sights and visiting other galleries (National Gallery, New National Gallery and Hamburger Bahnhof museum).
Probably the hardest task for Jocelyn was balancing Berlin’s busy nightlife with getting up for the work the next day; “I only lasted two days doing that!”
When describing what it is like to have your winning art work displayed at the Saatchi Gallery in London, Charlotte Thomson (Guernsey junior winner) could not quite find the words; “ I honestly do not know how to put it into words how amazing it felt to see my art hanging in the Saatchi Gallery because it is so overwhelming. At the time it honestly did not feel real.”
Hopefully now the realisation of Charlotte’s accomplished achievement has sunk in; “It was a total shock to be awarded the prize because the entries were to such a high standard. When I walked into the exhibition I was totally blown away by the other entries and definitely did not expect to win after looking around.”

It has been two months since the launch exhibitions of the Community Art Works student art competitions in Jersey and Guernsey and the winners and runners-up announced. Part of the runner-up prize was a three day workshop placement at Design and Advertising studio The Potting Shed. The students were given a live brief in the studio to apply their creativity, whilst learning to use design software and gaining an insight into ‘how to interpret a brief’. The students were also guided on the educational routes to Design if this happens to be the profession they wish to pursue.

Charlotte Thompson and Scarlett Moore, Guernsey and Jersey junior winners of the Community Artworks Competition, pictured outside the Saatchi Gallery on their prize day out. Following a visit to Deutsche Bank’s London HQ at Winchester House in the City where the girls were given a whistle-stop tour of a selection of the Bank’s corporate art collection by Alistair Hicks, the Bank’s senior Art Advisor and chairman of the judging panel, it was on to Saatchi Gallery in Sloane Square.
